Basics

Medicare Basics

As your trusted Medicare insurance agent, I am here to help you understand the intricacies of Medicare and how it relates to your unique circumstances. This approach allows you to make informed choices for your medical coverage.

Part A and B: Original Medicare

This is a Federal Health Insurance Program for people aged 65 and older as well as people with certain disabilities. However, it does not include prescription drug coverage.

Generally, Part A is your hospital coverage. If you have worked 40 quarters or 10 years, you are usually not expected to pay a monthly premium.

PART B: Outpatient Coverage

Services like doctor visits, x-rays, and other similar treatments are covered by this health plan. Most people have to sign up for Part B and there is generally a premium. Certain individuals who receive low-income subsidies do not have to pay premiums.

PART C: Medicare Advantage Plans

Part C plans are Medicare Advantage plans such as PPOs and HMOs. Advantage plans are offered through private insurance companies and may include benefits not offered in original Medicare.

PART D: Prescription Drug Plans

Part D plans are prescription drug plans. These can be purchased as a stand-alone plan or part of a Medicare Advantage plan.

Medicare Supplement or “Medigap” Plans

You can purchase Medicare supplements to help you cover the costs that original Medicare does not cover. These are used in conjunction with your original Medicare card. Medicare Supplements offer nationwide coverage. No referrals are necessary. You can go anywhere Medicare is accepted. Medicare is your primary insurance, and your secondary is your Supplement. There are a variety of plans available ranging from letters A-N. Your cost and coverage depends on which plan you select.

What is the difference between a Medicare Supplement and a Medicare Advantage Plan?

A Medicare Supplement is a private insurance plan, such as an F or G plan, that works in conjunction with your Original Medicare card. A Supplement covers all or part of the costs not covered by Original Medicare on a covered service.

A Medicare Advantage Plan is a plan contracted to cover Part A and Part B services, as well as some benefits that may not be covered by Original Medicare such as Prescription Drug Coverage, Dental, Vision, Over The Counter benefits. The benefits vary from plan to plan.
