What does Medicare cover?
Who is eligible for Medicare?
Medicare is a federal program that offers insurance to eligible individuals age 65 or older or under 65 with 24 months of a qualifying disability. Individuals with a diagnosis of ESRD ( End Stage Renal Disease) or ALS ( Amyotropic Lateral Sclerosis) are eligible regardless of age. Other eligibility requirements may apply. What are the parts of Medicare and what do they cover?
Part A: Hospital Insurance
Covers things inpatient hospital stays, home health care and some skilled nursing facility care
Part B: Medical Insurance
Covers things like doctor visits, x-rays, labs, outpatient services and preventative screenings.
Part C: Medicare Advantage Plans
Private health insurance companies offer Medicare Advantage Plans, known as Part C plans. Original Medicare benefits are included, along with extra benefits not offered by original Medicare.
Part D: Prescription Drug coverage
Medicare Part D is outpatient prescription drug coverage. Coverage is not automatic. To receive drug coverage you must join a Medicare approved plan, such as a Medicare Advantage plan wth drug coverage or a standalone Medicare prescription drug plan.
